For me Budapest is hidden gem of Europe. You do not see it in travel magazines, not many people talk about it, but city itself is amazing and has a lot to offer. Not mentioning prices that are very convenient for European metropole. So if you have weekend to spare, do not hesitate to visit Budapest.

Buda

This part lies on the west bank of river Danube and is very rich in landmarks. First one is Buda Castle sitting on Castle Hill and offering splendid view of Pest on the other side of Danube.

Close to Buda Castle on the Castle Hill lies Fishermen's Bastion. It has couple of towers and the panoramic view of river Danube, Pest or Margaret Island. If you love architecture, this is the place to go.

The last place we visited in Buda was The Citadella that is fortress located at the top of Gellért Hill. As above mentioned landmarks in Buda, even Gellért Hill offers panoramic view of Budapest.

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge spans the river Danube between Buda and Pest, so it would serve as good connecting bridge between story from Buda and Pest.

Pest

When you are on the other side of Danube River, you should not miss The Hungarian Parliament Building that is perhaps the most iconic building of Budapest. Also surrounding of parliament with all historical buildings is pretty nice.

One of the gems of Pest is also Roman Catholic St. Stephen's Basilica.

You can take a walk by the east bank of river Danube and see memorial The Shoes on the Danube Bank to honour the people who were killed by fascists during World War II. They were ordered to take off their shoes, and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away. It represents their shoes left behind on the bank.

Pest's streets are very good for wandering and exploring hidden corners of the city.

If you miss nature and want to get away from city centre, go to Margaret Island. It welcomes you with warm green arms. It can offer famous Grand Hotel, hidden Japanese garden, the "Music Fountain" or the Water Tower.

...performance of the Music Fountain..

Let me finish the story with panoramic view of night Budapest...
